Divorce Advice To Make Divorce Less Painful

What You Should Do To Your Friends After a Divorce

A divorce can be a painful experience. Agreed. But that does not give you the right to throw the fact that you are having one into your friends’ faces. If you have a circle of friends around while you are going through your divorce, good for you! But, you have to be careful not to take their support and concern for granted. You may not even realize that you are doing this. There are some indicators that you need to stand back and appreciate your friends for being there for you;

• Constant griping: When you constantly assume that you have a monopoly on pain, you will definitely be a bore to be with. Talking about how hurt or betrayed you feel all the time can set your friends running in the opposite direction after a while. While it’s fine initially to express yourself, making it the topic of every conversation you have with your friend can make you quite a wet towel.

• Indiscretion: If you are less than discreet about the intricacies of your divorce and other aspects of your life, such as your sex life when you are around your friends and their friends, you will end up embarrassing your friend and prompting them to avoid you often.

• Corner your friend’s spouse: If your friends are married, feeling that you have the right to borrow their spouses for a while because you happen to be spouseless can pose a threat to them. Respect your friends and their marriages.

• Self centeredness: Being a self centered person can drive your friends far away from you. When you talk only about yourself all the time and you don’t bother to inquire about how they are doing, you will no doubt be without friends soon.

• Selfishness: Sure, getting a divorce is painful but that does not mean that your friends don’t have problems too. When you take advantage of their kindness to constantly drop your kids off with them to baby sit but you never return the favor, you are being selfish. Don’t underestimate what friends can do for you in a divorce process or you’ll find yourself without anyone to stand by you.
